Vinyl or silicone reborn baby: differences and which one to choose

One of the questions we are asked most often when someone is looking for their first baby is: what is better, vinyl or silicone?

And the truth is, there is no single answer.

They are different materials, they feel different when you hold them, and each has its advantages. Often, it’s not so much about which one is “better,” but about what type of baby you are looking for, who it is for, and how it will be used.

That is why we wanted to prepare this short guide, explaining it as simply as possible.

Vinyl babies: the most common

Many vinyl babies are made with a vinyl head, arms, and legs, while the body is made of fabric.

This construction is very common because it allows the body to be soft and pleasant to hug, while the head and limbs maintain the more realistic look of vinyl.

Of course, not all vinyl babies are the same. There are different types of vinyl and also different constructions, so the touch, flexibility, and weight can change significantly from one model to another.

In our case, many of the vinyl babies at Bebés Tiriru have a soft fabric body and a soft silicone-vinyl head and limbs.

One of the things we like most about this type of baby is precisely that sensation when you hold it: the body is soft and comfortable for hugging, dressing, or placing in different positions.

In addition, there is a huge variety of sizes, weights, and styles.

You can find very light babies, others weighing several kilos, models that are asleep or awake, with hair, without hair... That is why we always recommend looking at the specific profile of each baby, and not deciding solely based on the material.

And what about silicone babies?

There is also an important difference here that often causes confusion.

Not all babies made with silicone are constructed in exactly the same way.

There are full-body silicone babies and also other models or kits that may combine certain silicone parts with another type of body.

When we at Bebés Tiriru indicate that a model is 100% silicone or full silicone, we mean that its entire body is made of silicone.

Silicone offers a different sensation than vinyl. It is usually more flexible, but not all silicones behave in exactly the same way: the formulation, thickness, and construction of the baby play a huge role.

That is why two silicone babies can feel quite different even if both are full-body.

Does silicone weigh more than vinyl?

Not necessarily.

This is another one of those ideas that is often taken for granted, but the weight depends on many factors: size, amount of material, construction, and, for models with a fabric body, the filling used.

You can find a vinyl baby weighing several kilos and, at the same time, a small silicone baby that weighs only a few hundred grams.

That is why we always try to indicate the weight and size of each baby in our profiles, because these details significantly change the experience of holding them in your arms.

Can all silicone babies be bathed?

No.

Just because a baby is made of silicone does not automatically mean it can be put in water.

This depends on the specific model, its construction, and also elements like paint, hair, or eyelashes.

At Bebés Tiriru, when a model can be used in water, we state it explicitly in its profile.

If it is not indicated as bathable, we recommend against doing so.

And what about vinyl babies?

In vinyl models with a fabric body, they are obviously not meant to be submerged in water.

It is also advisable to protect them from high temperatures and harsh products, because heat and certain products can damage some types of vinyl.

Our recommendation with any baby is quite simple: treat it with care, avoid excessive heat and harsh products, and always follow the specific instructions for the model.

Which baby should you choose for a child aged 3 to 8?

This is probably one of the questions moms ask us most often.

And here we believe there is something much more important than simply choosing between vinyl or silicone: thinking about the child's age, the baby's weight, its size, and how delicate the model is.

It is also important to always check the age recommended by the manufacturer and any safety warnings that accompany the product. In the EU, toys intended for children under 3 have especially strict requirements regarding small parts, and the safety of magnets and other components is also regulated.

Ages 3 to 5

For these ages, we would normally look first to ensure the baby is light and easy to handle.

A baby that is too heavy can be uncomfortable for a small child, regardless of whether it is vinyl or silicone.

A vinyl model with a fabric body can be very practical because the body is soft, and if you choose an appropriate weight, the child can hold, lay down, dress, and carry it in their arms more easily.

For these ages, we would prioritize:

  • a weight that the child can comfortably manage;
  • a size proportionate to their age;
  • clothing that is easy to put on and take off;
  • a sturdy construction;
  • few particularly delicate elements;
  • age-appropriate accessories.

We would also pay special attention to small accessories, magnets, or other detachable elements.

Ages 6 to 8

At these ages, many children already handle dolls with more care and can enjoy babies that are somewhat larger or more detailed.

They also tend to enjoy changing their clothes, preparing accessories, combing their hair when the model allows it, or creating a whole play routine much more.

Here, one can consider a somewhat heavier or more detailed baby if we know the child can handle it correctly.

A silicone baby can also be very attractive due to its touch and flexibility, but one must keep in mind that some models and finishes may require more delicate handling.

That is why we would never choose silicone just because it seems more realistic. First, we would look at which baby it is, how much it weighs, and how it will be used.

So… vinyl or silicone?

Personal taste plays a huge role here.

If you like the feeling of a soft baby when hugging it, with a fabric body, and you want a wide variety of sizes, weights, and styles to choose from, you will probably like vinyl babies a lot.

If you are looking for a baby whose entire body is made of silicone and you prefer that different touch and flexibility, then you can consider a 100% silicone model.

We have customers who are in love with both types.

And we also have those who start with a vinyl one and later want to try silicone… or vice-versa. 😊

What we would look at before choosing

Rather than deciding solely on the material, we would look at the entire baby:

how tall it is, how much it weighs, what type of body it has, whether it is asleep or awake, what care it needs, and, if it is for a child, whether its size and weight are comfortable for their age.

Because in the end, you can compare materials, sizes, and weights as much as you want, but many times something much simpler happens:

you see one and think…

“This one is mine.” 🤍

And that is probably the best starting point.

At Bebés Tiriru, you will find realistic vinyl and silicone babies in different sizes, weights, and styles. We try to clearly indicate the characteristics of each model so you can know what you are choosing before placing your order.
